

Dongkuk has had a dynamic history, launching itself as a producer of small iron products such as nails and wires in 1954 and growing into a global steel company that produces plate, re-bar and shape steels.
Its history is comprised of thorough workmanship where employees share a love of steel, thrive on challenges, and hold the common good higher than their own.


Dongkuk Steel was established as Daegung Industries by Chairman Chang Kyung-Ho in Busan. After Korea was liberated from Japanese rule, he set up Choseon Wires in 1949 to produce wires and nails.

Chairman Chang established Dongkuk Steel in Seoul with capital accumulated through Choseon Wires. He then built a large-scale steel plant in Busan (726,000m2), which eventually became the base for the company.

| 1965 | Blast furnace completed (50 tons/day), a first in Korea |
| 1966 | Electric furnace completed (15 tons/day), a first in Korea |
Dongkuk Steel was the first company to produce plates in Korea. After merging with Hankuk Steel Industry, which would eventually become the basis of Dongkuk’s Incheon Works, an era of mass production began with continuous casting.

Dongkuk’s scope grew tremendously in accordance with the increase in production. The basis of independent management was established in this time through positive management rationalization, including plant computerization and online management.

The basis of Dongkuk’s digital era was established in this time, from acquisition of materials to production and shipping. Even during the Asian financial crisis, Dongkuk continued to break productivity records and strengthen its competitive power with ultra-modern facilities and technical know.
